The next CTH class, “Introduction to CTH – A Shock Physics Analysis Package”, is postponed due to the pandemic. We will update this site with information for the next training opportunity when it is safe to have in-person training.


The class is being hosted by the Mechanical Engineering Dept. at Marquette University. It will be located in Haggerty Hall (not to be confused with the Haggerty Art Museum which is also on campus) located at 1515 W. Wisconsin Avenue, Milwaukee, WI on the south-west corner of Wisconsin and 16th street. On the first day Marquette will have people at the west and north doors of the building to help you find your way inside.


There is a visitor parking structure on 16th street between Wisconsin Ave and Wells St. (749 N 16th St, Milwaukee, WI 53233). We will give out day-pass parking vouchers at the class. Just pull into the structure, push the button and get a parking ticket.  The gate will open so you can park.  Save the ticket. When you leave, insert the ticket and pay with the voucher.

2. Ambassador Hotel (23rd and Wisconsin)

3. Potawatomi Hotel and Casino (16th and Canal St.)

 We would recommend you stay east of the Ambassador on 23rd street.

Class Schedule

Class will run typically 8 am to 5 pm daily, except the last day will be 8 am to 3 pm.

1st day: CTH overview, Example Problem: First Look, Essential Elements of the CTH Input Deck.

2nd day: Recommended and Optional Elements of the CTH Input Deck, Introduction to Spymaster, Example problem: Detailed Look.

3rd day: Introduction to Strength Modeling, Shock Physics and Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR).

4th day: Advanced AMR and other topics as requested.

Other Details

We will provide computers with access to CTH on a local Linux server. You are also welcome to bring your own laptop.

We will be providing coffee, water and other beverages. You will be on your own for lunch so be prepared for that. There is a range of options within walking distance.

We will provide printed course notes so you will have something to write on.

We recommend you have in mind a simplified version of your application. For example, what materials are you working with? Can you simplify the geometry by taking advantage of symmetry? For example, a 2D mesh assuming axial symmetry is often particularly useful.


We are offering two price points for this class: Basic Tuition ($972) which includes enrollment in the four day class plus up to 1 hour of email/telephone cth-help support. Support at this level will be valid until Sept 24, 2019. Basic Tuition Plus ($1,272) includes everything in Basic Tuition plus an additional 3 hours of email/telephone cth-help support for 1 year after the class (valid until July 24, 2020).

After we receive your registration and validate your information, we will send you an electronic invoice via email. You will be able to pay the invoice electronically by credit card (PayPal) or you can mail a check. Payment will be due two weeks before the class or upon receipt, whichever is later. Please let us know in the comments box on the form if you need to make other arrangements for payment.

You can add rows to the list (up to 10) as needed. We will only send the invoice to the primary email at the top of the form. If you are registering someone else but wish to receive the invoice to your email address, make sure your email is at the top of the form and theirs is in the Multi-Registration list.

We offer a complete refund if your plans change and you can’t attend the class. However, there is typically a wait list to attend so please let us know as soon as possible so we can offer your slot to someone else. Thanks.
